Why is students’ self assessment important?

I strongly believe that in order to be good reflective practitioners, we have to look into the development of new assessment forms such as self-, peer and co-assessment.

A review of literature, based on the analysis of 63 studies, suggests that the use of a combination of different new assessment forms encourages students to become more responsible and reflective.

What do you think about it?

Your valuable suggestions and feedback would contribute in implementing effective assessment forms for students learning.

In my opinion students self assessment will help me evaluate my teaching and their learning. It will show pupils interest and involvement in the task designed for them.

I believe that students' self assessment is the best way for a teacher to realize her mistakes and surmount her weaknesses.

It is important because the students have to reflect and elaborate on their self judgement. Then only he will know how good he is and how can he improve?

Self assessment is an important tool for each individual for growth and progression. However there can be a variety of tools for reflection. Most important is the validity and reliability of assessment which needs to be measured. Can you think of ways to also analyze the data and use it for students progression?

There are variety of ways to analyse data. First is the ongoing observation of a teacher. The assessment data can be analysed by drawing graphs and charts. But few things need to be kept in mind for example:
Have you selected the appropriate graph type for the data you are displaying?
Does your graph have a title?
Have you labeled the axes correctly and specified the units of measurement?

Assessment can help students to find out where are they now, and in which direction they have to do more effort.
and for me, it help me to judge that what are the steps I should take for improvement.

There is no doubt about the validity of students' self assessment as it is one of the main source for the teacher to understand where her students stand, their requirements and where they need to reach.
Not only this , but it also assist the teacher to design her lesson plan which caters individual needs of the students ensuring maximum learning.

Data analysis in terms of presentation is a good suggestion. However how to analyze the collected information and use the data through analysis is something which is challenging. A survey is meaningless if the information is not interpreted or used wisely. For example students were given a chance to select topics for creative writing competition / how was the analysis done? What are the areas that emerged after analyzing their responses?

I strongly believe that self assessment is necessary for one's growth. An individual can't improve without evaluating her/his performance.

To focus on teaching strategies, to have a follow up of conducted sessions, and to apply new techniques to explain the concept, it is very necessary. I think after each assessment student must be given a right to comment on the questions given. What makes them learn in that and what was confusing.

I read an article about formative and summative assessment. The link is as follows: http://fcit.usf.edu/assessment/basic/basica.html
"Formative assessments are on-going assessments, reviews, and observations in a classroom.
Which of the formative assessment strategies do you implement in your classroom?"
The formative assessments that I use are writing notes in class while observing pupils', short review by pupils at the end of the lesson. I would appreciate if you suggest alternative formative assessment strategies that I can implement and make my evaluation more productive.

Self assessment is important for a student because it builds confidence and helps them to learn more about themselves and also teaches them to set goals for themselves

Self assessment is very important for further development of progression. Self assessment provides opportunity for students to compare their experiences with each other. Students understand where they stand & how much effort they need for good progress.

Self-assessment determines whether or not the goals of education are being met. Assessment inspires us to ask these questions: "Are we teaching what we think we are teaching?" "Are students learning what they are supposed to be learning?" "Is there a way to teach the subject better, thereby promoting better learning?"

Fauzia thanks for response there are few more ways to record data and evaluate your lessons. You can record students responses on tape or mobile to know your talk and students talk. Another way is to determine symbols for moods or responses that are qualitative. This takes less time in recording and gives more data.
